Some Facts To Think About
You have probably heard the terms, Organic, Eco-Friendly and Sustainable as being positive terms when talking about the environment. Conversely, “Bisphenol A” otherwise known as BPA’s, are very harmful to some of the most vulnerable citizens of our planet.
What is Bisphenol A?
Bisphenol A is a Synthetic chemical compound that is used in various items and is classed by the Government of Canada as a hormone disruptor.
What can Bisphenol A do?
Bisphenol A is a hormone disruptor and studies have linked low-dose BPA exposure to a variety of effects such as: Increased prostate weight, decline in testosterone; breast cells predisposed to cancer, prostate cells more sensitive to hormones and cancer, permanent changes to genital tract and hyperactivity.
What are hormone disruptors?
They are substances that can interfere with the normal functioning of our hormone systems and produce adverse effects include reproductive, developmental and behavioural problems.
Who is most at risk?
Foetus, Infants and Children around puberty. The Foetus is the most sensitive group since their immature detoxification systems make them more vulnerable and they are at a very delicate state of development.
Conventional Cotton is one of the heaviest sprayed crops in the world. This method of growing cotton uses 25% of global pesticides, making it one of the most environmentally damaging crops on the planet. Did you know that it takes almost 1/3 of a pound of chemicals to grow enough cotton to make just one t-shirt? Not something you want to put your baby in. Since organic cotton is grown free of any synthetic chemicals, it maintains all of its natural oils, making it the softest, strongest and most durable cotton in the world. Certification of organic cotton is very important because it guarantees that strict growing and manufacturing standards are upheld.
Now lets look at Organic Choices
When you hear the Word Organic, you probably think of food. There are other types of organic products including clothing. Clothing can be labelled with a tag that says: Organic Cotton or Bamboo. These fibres are becoming more widely recognized as being better choices because the methods used to grow and harvest these products are done without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.
Organic Cotton must be grown on land that is certified as toxic-free for at least 3 years before being harvested. Farmers depend on soil being healthy to produce strong plants. Strong plants are more resistant to pests and diseases. They enhance soil fertility, support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems; which in turn protects our air, water and wildlife.
Fertilization methods such as manure or natural phosphates are used instead of commercially prepared fertilizers, which can include toxic chemicals. Crops are rotated with nitrogen-fixing plants to ensure high quality. Organic soils are known to hold more moisture so they usually require less irrigation. Weeding the land is done by hand or with special machinery eliminating the use of toxic chemicals.
Bamboo clothing is considered a sustainable and Eco-Friendly Product. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth. Bamboo is therefore an extremely renewable clothing fiber source. Bamboo grows to its maximum height in about 3 months and it matures in 3 – 5 years. Bamboo also has natural anti-bacterial properties; which makes it great if you’re dressing an infant or child
Let O’Baby Organics be your source for high quality and Healthy Choices for all your family Needs
